The Challenge
Yorwaste is the largest Waste Management Company in North Yorkshire and York, providing over half a million business waste and trade waste collections.
SMI were tasked with providing products that could meet the challenges of their waste environments, in all weathers and conditions. Initially the challenge was focused around finding:
- Good quality and appropriate protective safety gloves.
- Waterproof and comfortable footwear.
The Solution
SMI engaged very closely with Key Stakeholders at the Yorwaste Operational Depots and carried out trials of Rokwear brands over 8-week period. The staff trialling the products were provided a simple feedback form for them to write their responses. The results were very positive, and staff realised the products offered were of a right standard to meet the tough, rigorous Waste & Recycling Environments. All our products were competitively priced and lasted longer than their previous supplier’s products.

Now SMI now supply a broad variety of products to Yorwaste, including Workwear, Safety Footwear, Hi-Vis, Hand Protection, Janitorial and Hygiene and Workplace Safety Products. All ordered through our online portal MY-SMI, which has been described by the Head of Corporate Services as “easy, efficient and has the necessary checks in place to ensure that as a business we have maintained control over what can and cannot be ordered.”
Yorwaste have used the services of SMI for over 7 years. They have provided Yorwaste with the full array of PPE plus some additional ancillaries. Throughout the period they have worked closely with Yorwaste to ensure that the level of service and the quality of product is to the standard we require. They have worked particularly hard on the provision of gloves and safety footwear to meet our rather stringent demands and they continue to offer new products as they come to market.
The core products are based on the Rokwear brand, and we have found this to be of a high quality and good value for money. If we have ever reported a problem, which has occurred, they are very proactive in resolving the situation and ensuring that a fix is in place to reduce the likelihood of the problem occurring again.
