We took part in the Great British Beach Clean!

At SMI we are actively seeking ways to support and get involved with the local community. We recently took part in the Great British Beach Clean with Polyco, an annual event organised by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) in the UK.
It brings together volunteers from all walks of life to clean up coastal areas, removing litter and raising awareness about the importance of preserving our precious marine environments.
The Marine Conservation Society has been running its iconic annual beach clean to help tackle ocean pollution for the past 28 years. Over this time, thousands of people have come together to pick up 316 tonnes of litter – that’s the equivalent of more than 26 double decker buses!
Not only has the Great British Beach Clean made a huge impact on reducing the amount of plastic pollution on our beaches, but it has paved the way for some significant legislation on the most polluting products too:
- Leading to the introduction of the plastic bag charge.
- Banning microplastics in personal care products.
- Supporting a tax on single-use plastic items.
- Better wet wipe labelling.
We all had a great time getting involved and making an impact to cleaning our coastlines, collecting 33kg of litter in just a few hours!
